Today, parents do not ask their children to love thy neighbour because neighbours are strangers today

The collective consciousness which the human race has built for themselves for centuries has broken up. Individualism has taken over its place. The invisible hand of the market has played a great role in this change. So, what was considered holy is gone for a toss. A new culture is being made by the humanity after the digital mode of production has caught up with the world economy. The shift from electronic waves to digital data has given the humanity a plethora of possibilities. This shift is generating a new culture world-wide. The middle class in urban cities are enjoying lot of facilities and conveniences. Even beggars in metro cities have got choices! Today’s world is all about affluence and wealth as the commodification of all articles, including water, is almost complete.

Along with the prosperity, which the world is seeing for the first time in its written history, venality in its true form has engulfed the humanity. Meaning of life is no more in the hand of individuals. But at the same time, the ongoing drama is enacted in the name of individualism. Everyone is left alone to fend for himself/herself. Pampered by consumerism, people are running after choices. To keep the people engaged, trillions are pumped into the market and the money is changed hands just with a few clicks and a press of a button. All can join the party and there is something in store for everyone. The concept of time no more follows the ancient day-and-night syndrome as speed has bridged the distance. And time is is no more measured for man. On the other hand, it is the other way around. The questions like ‘what time you will come’ and what time we will meet’ specify this.

Human relationship is no more about the out-of-sight, out-of-mind concept, rather it is all about networking and staying connected. With an internet connection and a social networking account one can spend years alone in one’s room. No questions asked. Urbanisation of world cities and the new habitats sprung up in them allow the dweller to completely ignore his neighbour. Today, parents do not ask their children to love thy neighbour because neighbours are strangers today. For people in urban area, leaving the digital space empty is equal to inviting oblivion for the individual self.

All are alone even when standing in a crowded bus station and airport. No one can escape from this isolation which has become a part of life. All are trying to stay put with this unbearable contraction in daily life. Life has been reduced to mere sounds, signifying nothing. People now try to survive, rather than living their lives – an eternal recurrence of the same.

Some people try to rebel against this boredom. But their dissenting notes are found a place as T-shirt slogans and images or are belted out in the shades of LED lights and and laser diodes in a guarded and organised way. Nothing spontaneous follows from this as a conclusion is predestined. So these rebels end their tirade with an illusion. Here and there pro-people protests break out. But within no time, their agenda is hijacked and marketed to the whole world. Thus, those rebellions meets a natural death. So, people do not follow the ways of revolutionaries these days. It is waste of time, they may quip as justification. A valid reason indeed, considering the short life span of a man on the earth.
